Athens Airport
For Nordic Office of Architecture and Betaplan’s 2024 competition proposal for the expansion of Athens International Airport, TURZEN created 23 CGI views, a multimedia presentation and an architectural animation. Together, they gave the jury three complementary ways to engage with the proposal: to examine the architecture, understand the design, and feel the character of the future airport.
Two Formats.
Two Different Responsibilities.
The multimedia presentation explains the proposal. The animation makes the audience feel it.
Designed for the jury, the multimedia presentation organized complex architectural and operational information into a clear narrative. Voice, image and motion kept the explanation engaging without competing with it.
The animation carried a different responsibility. With reports and the multimedia presentation already carrying the explanatory burden, its primary role was to create an emotional connection with the future airport. Structured around departure and arrival journeys, it kept the spatial sequence clear while using composition, rhythm, sound and atmosphere to give the architecture emotional force.
Architects naturally test how clearly a film communicates their design. TURZEN also asks how powerfully it moves its audience. During previsualisation, we worked with the design team to establish the right balance between architectural clarity and cinematic expression before production began.
Twenty-Three Views. One Coherent Proposal.
Still images do something neither film can replace: they let the jury pause, compare and examine the design. Across 23 CGI views, TURZEN gave the proposal a consistent visual identity from airport scale to passenger experience.
-
In a competition submission, images appear across reports, presentations and jury discussions. Each view therefore had to stand on its own while remaining unmistakably part of the same proposal.
TURZEN maintained continuity across architecture, materials, lighting, human activity and atmosphere, allowing the complete series to function as one dependable visual reference rather than a collection of isolated images.
-
The image sequence moved from the airport’s wider setting and overall organization to the spaces passengers would encounter. Wider views established context and scale; closer views brought materiality, orientation and atmosphere into focus.
Together, the series connected strategic design intent with the experience of moving through the future airport.

Nordic Office of Architecture and Betaplan developed this proposal for the 2024 competition to expand Athens International Airport.
The design brought passenger experience, wayfinding, operational requirements and architectural identity into one vision for the airport’s future development.
